Peace Building Activities
Over the past eighteen months, Freshwinds/ACCR has been working under the aegis of the JIP in conjunction with the Western Sudanese Development Agency, the SLM, and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office/Department of Foreign and International Development. Through a number of initiatives they have held meetings and seminars with INGOs in order to advance the cause of peace in the Darfur region of Sudan. This has been extensively welcomed by all parties, and facilitated discussions and given encouragement towards settlement and peace on the basis of unity and equality. It is expected over the next few years that the JIP and WSDA will develop services and initiatives for and with the people of Darfur.

The JIP goals are wide ranging and long-term, and will take place over many years. Future goals include:

• Multimedia and vocational training programmes
• Projects to aid agriculture
• Computers for schools
• Constructing a vocational training centre to teach trade-related skills.
• Clinics and hospitals especially for children.

Phase 1, the acquiring of land and a “multi centre” building has already been completed.

Phases 2 (the installation of equipment and staff recruitment) and 3 (making the installation fully operational) require £850,000 for medical equipment, vehicles, materials etc. Salaries and smallproject costs for these phases are £650,000. Given sufficient levels of funding we expect to have a beneficial impact on the lives of between 10,000 and 20,000 people.

For completion of phases 2 and 3 the expected time scale is up to two years, subject to adequate funding. We expect that depending on levels of funding we will scale activities accordingly. It is expected that other funding for similar projects will be raised during the period of phase 3.
