'Living Choices' Outreach Project

Freshwinds Integrated Complementary Therapy Outreach Project was developed as a direct response to the palliative care needs of clients. This project directly supports the government's initiative to give patients more choice in their own care, as well as addressing issues of avoidable hospital admissions. There are many research studies that demonstrate the positive role of complementary therapies in symptom control and reducing side effects, especially when considering palliative care.

The Project was officially launched in 2003 through extensive and detailed collaborative working with all of the Birmingham Primary Care Trusts as well as the St. Mary's Hospice and John Taylor Hospice. Since its launch it has been a huge success and supportive of the palliative community care package in Birmingham.

This service is available to terminally ill palliative care adults who are registered with a BEN PCT or HVB PCT GP in Birmingham as part of the community coordinated services to the homes of clients. Patients need to be referred by their health professional to access the service.

Comments from Clients, Families and Referrers

“…The therapies helped to reduce pain and nausea and overall ability to cope with his condition, reducing the need for additional drugs and other community services……. He was initially sceptical of the advantage of acupuncture he soon felt that this type of treatment was the most effective in relieving pain and allowed him to have a pain free sleep. The benefits of the acupuncture treatment were priceless….” Family member

“…Freshwinds has made an enormous difference to the way in which I’ve been able to cope with my cancer. It has reduced the pain and nausea and released energy and courage to go on managing alone at home. Without Freshwinds I would have needed more institutional care and been a much greater drain on NHS resources….” Client

“…I can’t express the relief and relaxed expression in his face, he is so calm and peaceful for hours after, this therapy has given him so much relief…..” Family member

“Our patients and carers have benefited physically-some of the symptoms disappeared immediately and also emotionally e.g. anger has been resolved............ We as nurses also feel supported by working together with you”. Referrer
